From a Dated Fireplace to a Warm, Natural Stone Focal Point
This fireplace renovation by Pacific Living Contracting transformed an older living room fireplace into a substantial, natural-looking feature with a stronger architectural presence.
The original fireplace featured a light-coloured stone surround, dark tile hearth, a traditional fireplace insert, and an ornate framed mirror above the mantel. The renovation replaced the dated finishes with natural stacked stone, a substantial stone hearth, and a custom natural edge wood mantel, creating a warmer and more contemporary focal point.
Project Brief
The original fireplace had a light-coloured stone surround with a dark tiled hearth. While functional, the combination gave the fireplace a more traditional and dated appearance. The renovation introduced natural stacked stone in varied grey, brown and warm neutral tones, creating considerably more texture and visual depth. The stone was carried across the full fireplace surround and lower hearth, giving the feature a more substantial built-in appearance.
Project Result
The fireplace occupies a central position within the living room, making its appearance particularly important to the overall character of the space.
The renovation creates a stronger focal point by combining natural stone, custom woodwork and a contemporary fireplace finish.
The natural materials also work with the existing hardwood floor and neutral wall colour, allowing the renovated fireplace to feel connected to the rest of the room.
Project Transformation
Before: The fireplace featured a light-coloured stone surround, dark tiled hearth, traditional fireplace insert and ornate mirror above the mantel. The overall finish had a more dated and traditional appearance.
After: The fireplace now features varied natural stacked stone, a substantial stone hearth, a contemporary black fireplace insert and a custom natural edge wood mantel with a rich, textured finish.
The renovation demonstrates how updating the fireplace surround, hearth, mantel and fireplace finish can substantially change the character of an existing living room without requiring a complete room renovation.
